VOLUNTEER::What is work
like

There
is a variety of work to be done by
volunteers within the urban and rural areas.
The work load depends on the individual
interests of the volunteers, area of
specialisation, availability and duration of
stay.
AGV
collaborates with various community based
organisations in order to offer a variety of
programmes for our volunteers. Volunteer
programmes exist in:

Children Projects: Working with children
in nursery schools, parish projects, children with special
needs, education of children, playing, teaching music, art and
craft, sports, counselling and so
on.
Environment
Conservation: awareness creation on conservation, tree
planting sessions, empowerment on relationship between
human beings and environment.
HIV/AIDS
Projects: There
are many projects dealing with the prevention or/and
management of HIV/AIDS with special focus on women,
children, youth, families and so on. Some are home based
care whereby the beneficiaries are supported within their
families. Some are special hospitals, Voluntary Counselling
Centers (VCT),
hospices.
Hospitals/Clinics:
There are various clinics where work includes: counselling,
nursing services, offering treatment, mobile clinics, and so
on.
Micro
Enterprises: Projects aimed at empowering locals in both urban
and rural areas in the field of economic development. These
includes: micro credit, saccos, merry go round and other
group guarantee projects.
Outreach
Programmes: visit
families in their homes, children, and youth to follow up on
their progress, identification of needy cases, counselling
and accompaniment.
Sustainable
Agriculture: Especially in rural areas participate in training on
sustainable agriculture, marketing products, teach modern
agricultural practices.
Teaching at
Schools: Opportunity to teach
both at pre-school, primary, secondary school in various
subjects (such as languages, maths, science, music, art),
dance, career counselling, behaviour change
programmes.
Water and
Sanitation: Participate in coming up with methods for water
catchment, conservation for safe water projects for both
human and livestock use, irrigation on small scale. Help in
sanitation projects for the locals especially in slum areas
and rural areas.
Women and Girl Child
Projects: There
are lots of projects that focuses on women empowerment,
education of girl child. The opportunities are unlimited.
For example, women agricultural projects, advocacy on their
human rights, awareness creation, and so on, involvement in
skills training, building their self esteem, reproductive
health education.
Youth
Projects: work
with youth both boys and girls in income generation
activities, skills development, training in various fields
such as behaviour change, self esteem, small business
management, education, vocational training, sports, music,
exchange programmes.
Note that this list is
not complete. We are open to explore other programmes
depending on the needs of our volunteers. Therefore, if your
interests or areas of specialisation are not covered above,
get in touch with us and we will make the necessary
arrangements.
There will also be time
for safaris and tours for the volunteers which can be
organised by the AGV coordinators. This is an opportunity to
sample and appreciate what the country has to offer in terms
of culture, wildlife, nature, and so on and even in
neighbouring countries.
Voluntary
Costs
Volunteers pay a
minimum amount of money that will help the projects and
communities involved towards sustainability. The amount will
also enable us to cater for your various needs related with
your work in the projects. Remember that the resources
within these communities are much limited and cannot support
your costs.
Therefore, the amount to be
paid covers the following costs:
Registration fees
Administration fees
Supervision
in projects
Certificate
of completion
Transportation from JKIA to the place of
accommodation
Accommodation and meals in
family/apartment
The amount does not cover
the following:
Insurance
Medical
bill
Vaccinations
Visa
Tours and
safaris
Transport
within the country during project
visits
The cost for
volunteering is provided once the volunteer contacts our
Association and is open for discussion in order to suit the
need of both parties i.e. AGV, the projects and the
Volunteers.
The school was started
in 2007. It has around 100 children from baby class, pre
unit, nursery school, class one to two. The founder of the
school is a choir member in her local parish and the
children are great singers, thanks to her talent and passion
for music! The children burst into song and dance when
visitors arrive, under the guidance of their talented
founder, Ms Jane Njeri Njoroge. The school has five teachers
currently.
Opportunities for
volunteers: teaching English and other languages, maths,
music, art, sport, accompanying children in educational
trips, environment conservation exercises? and any
innovative activities from the volunteers.
AMKA is a Swahili name meaning
Wake Up! AMKA is a health project that
focuses on prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis and
HIV/AIDS treatment and management.
The services provided
include a clinic for HIV/AIDS related illnesses, a VCT
center, provision of ARVs, counselling, TB testing and
treatment. All these services are provided free of
charge.
The project has an
intensive and varied weekly programme with interesting and
engaging activities:
Monday:
Office work at the Center at Dagoretti Corner,
Nairobi
Tuesday:
Clinic for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS at the Center Clinic,
Dagoretti Corner
Wednesday: Mobile clinic at St.
Joseph Clinic, Gando Racecourse, about 20 kms from the
Center, in an informal settlement.
Thursday:
Mobile clinic at Gatina, Kawangware, another informal
settlement, around 30 kms from the Center.
Friday:
Feeding programme at the Center in Dagoretti corner for HIV
positive people and those suffering from TB.
Other activities
include: home visits, hospital visits for the sick, follow
up on beneficiaries; orphans follow up programme including
scholarship sourcing, support and placement.

St. Vincent Vocational
Training
Center |
The vocational Center
was founded by the Catholic Church at Dagoretti Corner; St
Vincent Parish. The Center offers training in various skills
especially for the poor youth in the community who cannot
afford to continue with formal education.
The courses offered
include: masonry, carpentry, beauty and hairdressing, cloth
making, beadwork, soap making, mechanics, electrical
engineering.
Volunteers are welcome
to participate in any of these activities.
